You know it’s getting really sad when Christians insult
themselves without even recognizing they’ve done it. See
the back page for instance, where a church reader board
says: “Faith sees God, Intellect does not”. *Sigh* It’s just
too easy — they are admitting that only stupid people see
God. I guess since they put that phrase out there for all to
see that they admit to their lack of intellect. Or perhaps
they are PROUD that they lack intellect?? In this day and
age that’s probably not far from the truth. After all, most of
these people think GW Bush is manna sent from Heaven!
And along those same lines, I offer up this Letter to the
Editor that appeared in the Albany Democrat Herald on
Saturday, June 11, 2005:
Why do you bemoan that you published forecasts of
drought that have now been proven false (editorial,
June 7)? Don’t you know that in early March, when
the year-to-date rainfall was less than a third of
normal and you published pictures of empty
reservoirs, that the army of faithful began praying for
rain? It began to rain, and now the year-to-date
rainfall is about 80 percent of normal, and the
reservoirs are adequately filled. Your articles alerted
us that prayers were needed. Glory to God for His
great mercy!
Linda Martin, Albany
The second, and more pressing issue, is what kind of God
are they praying to anyway?? What kind of God operates
at 80%? Let’s say that after some real praying we had seen
125% of normal rainfall, now THAT would be the kind of
God I could respect — but this God only seems to want to
put in 80% of the effort! Can you imagine your kid getting
away with this sort of thing? “Mom, I cleaned 80% of my
room! How come I can’t get 100% of my allowance??”
Well I guess 80% IS a B, albeit a B-. This God also seems to
be phoning it in a little late too! Doesn’t he realize that by
not letting the correct rain fall during the early spring that
he’s ruining our summer!
Then again, with all this late season rain, we haven’t had to
turn on our sprinkler system and we’ve been saving about
$40/month. Hmmm.......on second thought maybe this 80%
God isn’t such a bad idea? It would sure as heck fire
explain a lot in this world! WHOA! I guess it IS hard to
hold onto your intellect if you try to justify the things this
80% God does!
Drought averted through prayer
At first glance you might not see the problem with this
letter. So let’s go over the premiss it presents. There was a
drought and “now the year-to-date rainfall is about 80
percent of normal”. There are two problems here. First of
all, as the writer admits, we are STILL 20% behind normal
— I believe you could easily refer to that as still being in a
drought so I don’t quite see what the excitement is all
about.
