August 2003

I just have to shake my head as I watch the news this week. Despite big news stories going on around the world, the media is obsessed with the recall in California. It has become a a real circus down there, especially with Arnold Schwarzenegger throwing his hat into the ring.

The question many outside California are asking is “Why is Gray Davis being recalled?” That’s an EXCELLENT question! As we all know, California has been especially hard hit by the failing economy. The crash of the electronics market took it’s toll on Silicon Valley. Thousands of people are still out of work.

California was also a victim of the Enron energy scandal. Enron inflated prices and began to gouge the state with sky high energy bills. Our unelected president decided not to step in and interfere — after all he was pals with the head of Enron. When the president finally DID do something it was too late, the state had lost too much money.

This all brings us back to our question of “Why is Gray Davis being recalled?” Well, as anyone can clearly see, Davis is to blame for all of this! It’s his fault the economy went bad. It’s his fault Enron stole money from the state. It must be nice to be able to have one person to blame for all these problems.

The fact is Gray Davis was elected by the majority of people who bothered to turn up on election day. Now, those who couldn’t be bothered to get up off their couches and vote, get to recall the governor. One of my favorite quotes from all this was said by Arnold Schwarzenegger when he was on the Jay Leno show to announce that he was running for Governor. He said that there will be an election and he would abide by the results. Funny —there was already an election! They elected Gray Davis! Why isn’t he abiding by THOSE results?! I guess what he REALLY meant to say was that there would be continued elections and he would abide by the results, so long as he agreed with them.

I would not at all be surprised if Arnold wins the recall election. Watching interviews of people on the street, they all seem to think that there needs to be some sort of shake up in the system. They say we need someone who’s not a politician to run the political system. That’s very interesting. I wonder if come tax time they will want someone who isn’t a tax accountant to do their taxes. Or when they need to get their car repaired, perhaps they will want someone other than a mechanic to do the job? You just have to love that sort of logic!

As a tribute to Arnold’s run for elected office, I offer the following bit of commentary (no, I didn’t steal this, it’s the product of my own warped imagination):

Arnold Schwarzenegger

Leave it to Arnold to treat this like some sort of Batman & Robin story as he rushes in like the Last Action Hero. It will be the End of Days as on The 6th Day he’ll create a lot of Collateral Damage telling True Lies as he races in like a Commando trying to be an Erasor and Terminate his Junior status as the front Running Man. Personally I feel the folks of California are getting a Raw Deal during this Total Recall. The only thing that Arnold should be is a Kindergarten Cop in charge of Twins with Red Heat rash on their butts.

This all looks like some sort of Scavenger Hunt as candidates come out of the woodwork. The Villain here is the Republican party who are acting like a Predator making sure the people of California Stay Hungry for true leadership, something they can starting staying a Long Goodbye to as Arnold becomes Conan the Destroyer of elections.
